Last summer we had an unfortunate drowning in Leesville Lake. Following the rescue and recovery operations, the Hurt Volunteer Fire Department noted to the Leesville Lake Association that they lack a Graphing Sonar System that would have greatly sped up the process. Unfortunately, the Fire Department budget is not able to fund the $7,000 – $8,000 purchase price. In keeping with their fundamental purpose of keeping the lake safe for enjoyment, LLA is taking on a project to raise the funds needed. LLA kicked off the campaign with a $1,000 donation already and is seeking additional funds from other lake users. Even if you live in an area serviced by another fire department for most of your emergencies, if the emergency is on the lake, it’s the Hurt Volunteer Fire Department that will be the first responders when a call comes in because of how close they are to the public launch location near the dam.
What is a Graphing Sonar System?
Quite simply it is an enhanced fish finder. More technically, a sonar system sends out sound waves (or acoustic pulses) into the water. These pulses travel until they hit an object or the seafloor, where they are reflected back to the sonar system. By measuring the time it takes for the sound waves to return, the system calculates the distance to the object or surface and generates a visual representation of the underwater environment. In Search and Rescue (SAR) applications, the data is processed further with software tools to produce an image on a viewfinder that allows the operator to detect obstacles, dangers, equipment, divers and intended targets or individuals.
Can a Graphing Sonar System be used in murky water or in the dark?
Yes, sonar is using sound waves as opposed to traditional optical or GPS-based navigation methods. In low-visibility conditions, such as turbid waters or dark environments, sonar provides operators with a clear view.
